Top 5 habits to make your daily routine more environmentally friendly!

It’s the start of a new year, and as we’re all still spending most of our time at home, there’s no better time to reflect on our personal contributions to the sustainability of the planet.

A common misconception about going green is that it costs time and money but that’s simply not true. You’ll be surprised just how easy it is to make a couple of small shifts in your daily routine to make it more environmentally friendly.

Save energy with LEDs.

During these dark winter days and more time to spend at home, there's no denying that we're using more energy through lighting and heating our homes. When the natural daylight starts to fade, we recommend using LED bulbs to light your workspace rather than halogen ones, as these use up to 80% less energy. While motion sensor LED lights aren't practical for home use, we're proud to use them at Ulok Self Storage to ensure energy isn't wasted.

Keep food fresh for longer.

While you're out doing your shopping, consider avoiding plastic produce bags available in store, and invest in some cotton canvas reusable bags. These are much better for the environment and are also more durable than their plastic counterparts. We believe that reusing products is better than replacing them, which is why we encourage all our customers to reuse their moving boxes and any packing materials.

Wave goodbye to paper clutter.

During the workday, many of us are guilty of printing out documents and jotting down tasks on post-it notes, and while paper is recyclable, this creates clutter and unnecessary waste. At Ulok Self Storage, our sign-up process has gone paperless. We recommend you follow suit by trying out digital post-it notes, switching off the printer, and even opting out of junk mail or saying no to printed receipts. These small schanges can save you space in the home and fewer items in your household waste.

Wash away unsustainable shower habits.

Most of us have a row of plastic bottles with our favourite beauty products in, but did you know these are extremely difficult to recycle once they’re empty? This is why we recommend ditching plastic bottles altogether and opting for solid soap bars. It’s also important to take a minute to think about your water consumption. As tempting as it might be to stand under the hot water for minutes on end on a cold winter morning, try and hop out as soon as you’re clean to avoid using excess water.

Your daily boost.

Let’s start with the morning tradition of most Brits around the country – a warming cuppa. You might be surprised to hear that some tea bags containing your daily boost are actually sealed with single-use plastic and therefore can’t be recycled. To avoid having to search your supermarket shelves for environmentally friendly tea bags, we recommend making the switch to loose-leaf tea. With this swap, not only are you reducing your waste, but you also might notice the quality of your brew increasing as well, as loose-leaf tea is often handpicked meaning the best parts of the bush are selected, while tea bags contain lower-quality machine-picked leaves.

We know that reducing single-use plastics from our lives is extremely beneficial to the planet, which is why Ulok Self Storage is committed to removing them from our business, and why we champion you doing your part at home.
