Practical Advice for Storing Your Belongings on the Fylde Coast
At Ulok Self Storage, we speak to people every day who need a little extra space. Whether you're moving house, running a local business, decluttering, or just trying to organise life a bit better, storage can make things much easier.
But many people aren't sure how to store things properly, or what the best way is to prepare their belongings before moving them into a storage unit.
As a local storage provider across Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre, we’ve picked up plenty of tips along the way. Here are some of our best bits of advice to help you get the most out of your storage.
1. Label Everything Clearly
It might sound obvious, but labelling boxes properly can save you a huge amount of time later.
When packing boxes, write on at least two sides so you can see what’s inside even when they’re stacked. Some people even number their boxes and keep a simple list of what’s inside each one.
For example:
Box 1 – Kitchen utensils
Box 2 – Winter clothes
Box 3 – Important documents
This makes it far easier to find things when you need them.
2. Use Strong Boxes (Not Old Supermarket Ones)
Not all boxes are made equal. Old cardboard boxes from supermarkets can weaken quickly, especially if they’re holding heavier items.
For storage, it’s always best to use strong double-walled boxes. They stack better, protect your items, and make moving things much easier.
At Ulok, we often recommend keeping box sizes fairly consistent, as it helps when stacking items neatly inside your unit.
3. Think About Access Before You Pack
One of the most common mistakes people make is filling a unit from front to back without leaving any space.
If you know you’ll need access to certain things, place them towards the front of your unit.
A good trick is to create a small walkway down the middle so you can reach items without unpacking everything.
4. Protect Furniture Properly
Furniture can easily pick up marks or dust during storage if it isn’t protected.
We recommend:
Using furniture covers or blankets
Wrapping delicate items
Removing table legs where possible
Storing mattresses upright
This keeps everything clean and helps maximise space inside the unit.
5. Avoid Storing Loose Items
Loose items can quickly turn a storage unit into a cluttered space.
Instead, try to:
Pack small items into boxes
Use clear containers where possible
Group similar items together
Keeping things organised from the start makes a big difference later.
6. Use the Height of Your Unit
Many people forget that storage units have plenty of vertical space.
By stacking boxes safely and placing heavier items at the bottom, you can often store far more than you think.
Think of your storage unit like a 3D puzzle, where organisation helps you fit everything neatly.
7. Choose the Right Size Unit
A lot of people worry about choosing the wrong size storage unit, but our team is always happy to help.
At Ulok, we have units ranging from small personal storage to larger spaces for house moves or business stock.
If you're unsure, just give us a call and we can recommend the right size based on what you’re storing.
